It's been a particularly devastating fire season for Victorian wildlife. On Friday 9 January 2026, temperatures soared, triggering bushfires very close to The Haven. Our property manager and Wildlife Carer Andrew was there to protect the animals in care as always. Andrew had a plan and had temporarily relocated some of the animals to foster care, and was prepared to make the difficult decision to release remaining animals if he was forced to evacuate. Andrew stayed on site when many would have left. He is very experienced in this type of scenario and believed that the fires would (narrowly) miss The Haven. And so far they have. The toll on wildlife (and other animals) though has been devastating.  

Of course the fire season is ongoing and we are receiving calls from property owners and vets to take in a number of those who have survived. Some pics are too graphic to post a selection of others are below.
